How LED Lighting Upgrades Support Edinburgh’s Green Initiatives

Back to Learning Centre

Sustainability is a growing priority in Edinburgh, whether it’s the citywide green initiatives spearheaded by the council or the small changes that property owners can make to reduce their carbon footprint.

One simple upgrade you can make in your building is changing to LED lighting – particularly in communal areas like stairwells. It’s a simple way to save energy, reduce your electricity bills, and help Edinburgh reach its sustainability goals.

At Lumen Electrical, we want to help property owners and building managers switch to more environmentally friendly lighting solutions. Here, we explore some of the reasons to upgrade to LED lighting in your Edinburgh property.

Edinburgh’s Green Initiatives

The City of Edinburgh Council has already set the ambitious goal of being a net-zero city by 2030: 15 years before the Scotland-wide target of 2045.  To do this, they’re working with partners across the city to reduce emissions in construction, transport, and infrastructure.

Since 2018, the council has been steadily upgrading streetlights citywide to LED bulbs: and this more sustainable lighting has accounted for a significant portion of the council’s reduced carbon emissions and lower energy costs.

But it’s not just a top-down attitude towards sustainability in Edinburgh. One study found our city to be more climate aware and creating less waste per household than any other major city in Scotland.

Lumen Electrical is proud to work exclusively throughout Edinburgh and support the city’s green initiatives by providing LED lighting upgrades for buildings across the city.

Why Switch to LED?

The UK government has phased out the production of fluorescent bulbs to encourage more commercial buildings to switch to LED lighting, so there’s never been a better time to make these changes in the communal areas of your property.

UK Energy Lighting has outlined some of the reasons why more people should make the switch to LED bulbs:

  • They’re more energy efficient, converting almost all of their energy into light. Fluorescent lights, on the other hand, convert up to 95% of energy into heat rather than light, wasting most of the energy it takes to power them.
  • They contain no toxic chemicals, so they don’t contaminate the environment at the end of their lifespan. They are also much easier to dispose of than other types of bulbs.
  • They have a much longer lifespan than traditional bulbs (up to 100,000 hours). This means less maintenance and fewer replacements.

Upgrade your stairwell lighting

Communal areas like the stairwells of your building are an ideal place to start upgrading your lighting to LED bulbs.

High-quality stairwell lighting is essential to making your building a safer space for every resident. LED bulbs improve the light quality of your building stairwell, and so play a vital role in reducing potential accidents.

Brightening up your stairwells with LED lights not only transforms the space for residents and building users – they also cut down on maintenance costs.

LED light bulbs are a simple investment for your Edinburgh flat building that will lower your bills for years to come.
