No More Fluorescent Lights: Upgrading Stairwell Lighting to LED in Your Edinburgh Flat Building

It’s time to say goodbye to fluorescent lights and embrace the benefits of LED lighting.

Since 2020, LED lighting has been on the rise in the UK and is now used in up to 14% of all household lighting appliances in the country.

To encourage the uptake of LED and more energy-efficient lighting, the UK government phased out the production of fluorescent bulbs between 2023 and 2024. If you haven’t already, it’s time to switch to LED lighting in the stairwell of your Edinburgh flat building. We know that upgrading your stairwell lighting might not be top of your to-do list. At Lumen, we want to show you that upgrading to LED lighting is an easy way to invest in improving your property, make big savings in the long run, and reduce your carbon footprint.

Cut electricity costs for years to come

LEDs are the most energy-efficient and wallet-friendly choice for your stairwell lighting.

Although LED lighting has a higher upfront investment, its low running costs will save you a lot of money in the long run. The average yearly cost to run a fluorescent bulb is around £14.89. For an LED bulb, this figure drops to £3.72 per year.

This lighting will last much longer than traditional lighting solutions – an LED bulb can last up to 50,000 hours, which translates to well over 10 years of continuous use.

Reduce energy waste

Making the switch to LED lighting brings huge environmental benefits.

LED bulbs convert approximately 95% of their energy into light, so no energy is wasted. This reduces your carbon footprint alongside your monthly bills.

LED bulbs also don’t contain toxic chemicals that contaminate the environment, so they’re much easier to dispose of than traditional fluorescent tube lighting.

Improve your property

If you’re a property owner or building manager, improving your stairwell lighting is an easy way to invest in your building and create a safer environment for you and your building residents.

Upgrading your fluorescent lights to LED will improve the light quality of your building’s communal areas

Not only do LED lights make these spaces more pleasant for those using the building, but they are also a safer option for your property. They don’t contain mercury, produce less heat, and are safer to dispose of than traditional bulbs.

They’re also more durable and won’t break as easily, meaning you won’t have to replace them as frequently.

How to upgrade to LED lighting with Lumen Electrical

You’ve heard the benefits and you’re ready to make the switch. Where do you start?

Firstly, there are a few practical details to think about.

You should consider:

  • The brightness that you’re looking for in your building’s stairwell
  • The desired colour temperature
  • The beam angle to make sure you’re choosing the right bulbs for your space

An experienced electrician can advise you on what’s right for your stairwell.

If you’re in an older building, you need to bring in a professional to inspect the wiring to ensure everything is up to code before you get started to prevent electrical hazards. They can also make sure that LED lights are compatible with your fixtures and advise on how to optimise the lighting in your stairwell.
